How has the medical declaration changed?
We no longer ask you to go through your entire medical history. Instead, when you apply for travel insurance that includes cover for medical conditions, the focus is only on the past five years of your health history. The new questions are clear and easy to answer, making it faster to complete your quote.
Why this matters to travellers:
This change makes a real difference if you’ve had health issues in the past that don’t affect you anymore. For example:
- If you had childhood asthma but haven’t needed treatment for a long time.
- If you had depression or another condition over ten years ago that’s now well managed.
In situations like these, you might not need to disclose these older conditions under the updated process. Because you’re declaring fewer conditions, you could pay lower premiums, especially if you’re looking at annual multi-trip insurance, where savings can add up over time.
That said, if you’ve had treatment, medication or checks for a condition within the last five years, like diabetes or controlled high blood pressure, you still need to declare it.
Already have a policy? Here’s what happens:
If you already have travel insurance with pre-existing conditions listed, those details stay on your policy, even if they’re now outside the five-year limit. On your next quote or renewal, all you’ll had to do is answer the updated medical screening questions honestly and accurately.
