Europe by high-speed train - Paris

Every weekend, the team at One Tree Travel share their thoughts on destinations. Whether you are planning your next holiday or considering a last-minute short break this weekend, we hope  you will consider how you could reduce the environmental impact of your trip.  By the way, unless stated otherwise, we are not affiliated with any of the organisations or destinations mentioned. We are sharing our personal experiences and hope we’ll inspire you with our suggestions!

Europe by train – a lower carbon alternative to air travel

St Pancras International became the gateway to Europe when Eurostar’s hub moved there from Waterloo back in 2007. Eurostar connects London with several prominent cities across Europe, including Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and several in between. High-speed rail services are recognised for their relatively low carbon footprint compared to air travel, making them a more environmentally friendly option for European travel.

Eurostar trains reach speeds of up to 186 mph (300 km/h) on dedicated high-speed lines. This ensures swift journeys, with travel times from London to Paris taking approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, and London to Brussels around 2 hours. That makes it viable to go to some fantastic cities for the weekend and we’ll explore some of those over the next few weeks.

Paris in the springtime

Paris makes a great destination for a springtime break and the pink cherry blossoms, usually flowering in late March/early April, will add a bit of colour to all those photos you’ll take!  We recommend starting your day with a brisk stroll along the Seine River and indulge in a bit of petit dejeuner at a café to fuel your exploration. In the office we have ‘pastries Friday’ but, with no disrespect to the bakers of St Neots, everyone knows they don’t quite match the fresh, buttery, croissants, and pains aux raisins in Paris.

Harry, who works in Finance so normally expects someone else to buy the pastries, is the colleague who most recently visited the French capital. Here’s some of his itinerary; he’d never been before so it’s full of the big hitters:

  • Visit the Eiffel Tower and enjoy a picnic in Champ de Mars Park.
  • Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Marché Bastille, a bustling market.
  • Climb to the top of the hill to visit Sacré-Cœur and take in the views.
  • Take a sunset river cruise along the Seine for breathtaking views.
  • Discover iconic artworks at the Louvre, home to the Mona Lisa.
  • Indulge in French cuisine at a local bistro or café – it may seem pricey but even Harry accepted he shouldn’t have visited the golden arches quite so often!

Of course, we could make dozens of alternative lists, and perhaps we’ll re-visit Paris in another blog.  For now, we'll wonder where the train will take us next week.
