What are the must-visit spots in Cornwall?
Cornwall sits at the very tip of southwest England - the part that feels miles away from city life. Think cliffs that drop into turquoise water, beaches that actually look tropical on sunny days, and towns that are equal parts chilled and charming. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to ditch your phone, grab a surfboard (or at least a coffee), and just explore. Whether you’re after good food, adventure, or a quiet break by the sea, Cornwall delivers.
If you’ve seen photos of Cornwall online, chances are St Ives is in them. It’s got beautiful beaches, cobbled streets, and a creative vibe that mixes surfers, artists, and holiday-goers all in one place. Grab a Cornish pasty from a bakery, wander along the harbour, or catch an exhibition at Tate St Ives; it’s one of those towns you could happily spend a few days in.
Then there’s St Michael’s Mount, a tiny island with a castle on top that you can actually walk to when the tide’s out. When the sea comes in, boats take you across instead - it’s one of those “only in Cornwall” experiences.
You can also head to Tintagel Castle on the north coast. Perched on cliffs above the Atlantic, it’s tied to the legend of King Arthur, but even if myths aren’t your thing, the views alone are worth it.
Falmouth is perfect if you like a mix of coastal walks and nightlife. The town’s full of independent shops, live music, and great seafood. Or if you’re a foodie, Padstow is your spot - celebrity chefs, harbourside restaurants, and some of the best fish and chips you’ll ever eat.
If you prefer somewhere off the radar, check out Porthtowan. It’s less touristy, with a wide beach and great surf. There’s a local bar overlooking the sea that’s perfect for sunset drinks after a day in the water.
How do you get to Cornwall, and what’s the best way to get around?
You can hop on a direct train from London Paddington to Truro or Penzance in about five/six hours. But honestly? Driving gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. The scenic roads are full of secret beaches and lookout spots you’d miss otherwise. Just be ready for some narrow lanes - it’s all part of the Cornish charm.
When’s the best time to visit Cornwall?
June to September is peak season - warm weather, surf-ready seas, and beach days that last forever. Spring (April and May) is also lovely, with wildflowers along the cliffs and fewer crowds. Autumn’s great for hiking and sunsets, and even winter has its charm if you like wild waves and cosy pubs.
What should you know before you go?
The weather changes fast, so pack layers and a light jacket. Most places take cards, but it’s handy to carry a bit of cash for smaller cafés and local markets. Cornwall’s food scene is worth the trip alone - try a traditional Cornish pasty, cream tea (cream first, always), and seafood straight off the boat.
Why will you fall in love with Cornwall?
Cornwall just has that vibe - relaxed, a little wild, and full of character. You can hike cliff paths in the morning, swim in clear water by afternoon, and end the day watching the sunset with a pint by the sea. It’s got history, culture, amazing food, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you wish you could stay longer. Once you’ve been, you’ll get why so many people keep coming back.
