Building greener communities: How tree equity and the Woodland Trust are driving real change

Getting involved in climate action as a business can feel overwhelming at first, but attending the Woodland Trust’s Business in Nature day really opened our eyes. From listening to inspiring speakers and trying woodland yoga to connecting with others passionate about the environment, we realised just how much impact we can make.

What really stayed with us was the concept of tree equity. It was new to us, but now we understand its importance - ensuring every community has equal access to the benefits trees provide, like cleaner air and improved wellbeing. Curious why it matters and how you can get involved? Keep on reading.

Our time at the Woodland Trust

Last week’s Woodland Trust Partnerships Business in Nature event was absolutely incredible! Filled with passionate people, fresh thinking, and a genuine drive to restore woodland and plant new forests. We heard powerful insights from David Saddington, enjoyed an inspiring interview with Tammie about empowering young people, tried woodland yoga, and saw all the UK’s native trees at the Arboretum!

We left feeling hopeful and inspired to look beyond our exisiting partnership with Ecologi. That’s when we discovered something amazing: our St Neots office sits in a community with a tree equity score of 99!

What is a tree equity score?

Tree equity measures how fairly tree benefits are distributed across UK communities. The Woodland Trust has developed a tool that utilises Google’s tree canopy data, along with six climate, health, and social indicators, to assign each urban neighbourhood a score between 0 and 100. The lower the tree equity score, the greater the need for trees.

Why does tree equity matter?

Trees provide essential environmental health benefits that shouldn’t depend on postcode:

  • Air quality improvement
  • Heat reduction
  • Mental health benefits
  • Climate resilience

Unfortunately, not all communities have equal access to these benefits. Areas with fewer trees often face worse air pollution, higher temperatures, and limited green spaces to relax and recharge. This can have a real impact on people’s health and wellbeing. That’s why understanding and addressing tree equity is so important - it’s about making sure every neighbourhood has fair access to the advantages trees offer.

Taking action together: How tree equity inspires a greener future

Last week’s event reminded us that restoring nature isn’t just a corporate responsibility – it’s a shared opportunity to create healthier, more resilient communities. From inspiring speakers to hands on experience, we left with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility.

Our research into learning about tree equity brought home just how important it is to think beyond our own footprint. Every tree planted, every green space protected, brings us closer to a fairer, greener future for all.

If you’re feeling inspired too, visit the Woodland Trust to learn more and discover how you can make a real difference – right where you are.

Because when nature thrives, so do we.
